Citizenship and Naturalization

The Process of Becoming a U.S. Citizen

If your parent or grandparent was a United States citizen (USC) on the day you were born, you may already be a USC. There are several ways to derive or acquire United States citizenship.

The process of becoming a U.S. citizen is complex. There are many steps associated with the citizenship and naturalization process. At the Law Offices of Teresita Marsal-Avila, our team of bilingual lawyers will represent clients through this confusing process.

U.S. Naturalization

For many clients we recommend the naturalization process to gain legal protection in the United States. In order to become a naturalized citizen of the U.S., clients must demonstrate a variety of requirements including:

  • Residency in the U.S.
  • Demonstrated good moral character
  • Basic English skill
  • Adequate understanding of the history and laws of the U.S.

United States Citizenship

It is generally more difficult for clients to gain U.S. citizenship. Clients must demonstrate a relationship with a current citizen. The more distant the relation, the more challenging it is for clients to obtain citizenship. We will assist you in obtaining both acquired and derivative citizenship.
